FALLS PREVENTION

Description
Various measures taken to minimize risk and the number of falls incurred by older adults.

Falls and the resulting injures are one of the most common  medical condition that the average elderly individual undergoes.

Statistical studies show the following:
  •  In the United States, annually, more than 1/3 of individuals 65 years of age or older experience  a fall.
  •  While men are more likely to die as a result of a fall, women are more likely to have a non-fatal injury from a fall.
  •  The risk of being seriously injured as a result of a fall increases with age.
  •  As for race, white males over the age of 75 have the highest rate of death as a result of a fall.

Symptoms
Injuries resulting from falls include:
  •  Bruising
  •  Hip Fractures (most common but legs, feet, shoulders, arms and hands get injured as well)
  •  Head traumas, which often cause traumatic brain traumas
  •  Injuries to internal organs

  •  Get regular, comprehensive eye examinations, 1-2 times a year
  •  Review all your medications with your doctor, to ascertain if those that have side effects that increase the risk of falling can be changed or discontinued
  •  Use assistive devices such as canes and walkers when needed and have safety bars installed in the shower and bathroom.
