PET NUTRITION

Description
Since good nutrition is the foundation of good health, it is important to feed your pet not only food that provides the appropriate nutrients, but a diet is geared toward the breed of the animal and its size. Though in the wild dogs are basically carnivores (eaters of meat), they have become omnivores (eaters of plant and animal) since being domesticated. Cats on the other hand are strict carnivores – they must have meat to survive.

Statistical studies show the following:
In the United States obesity in both dogs, cats and birds has been progressively increasing Studies have shown that poor nutrition is a major factor in obesity which greatly increases the risk of many ailments including heart disease and arthritis.

General Tips
  •  Choose whether you will prepare foods at home or purchase ones ready made before you choose the health care provider who will devise a diet plan for your pet. It is important that your pet’s nutritionist recommends a diet that is feasible for you to follow.
  •  The nutrition of the pet is based on its breed and size. Please note that in the wild a carnivore’s diet is high in animal protein, low in fiber and very low in complex carbohydrates
  •  When feeding birds, you must realize that each breed of bird needs to be fed differently.
The best diet for the domesticated seed-eating birds consists of specially formulated foods in pellet form, fruits and vegetables, and at times a treat. However, there are breeds of birds that feed on insects and invertebrates, while others eat fruit, seeds, nuts and nectar.
  •  Make sure your pet gets enough water
  •  Do not give your pet raw egg –it may interfere with the metabolism of key nutrients
  •  Give your cat the essential amino acid Taurine
