FLEAS and TICKS

Description
The flea is a wingless creature that has three pairs of legs. Its hind legs are built differently to accommodate for jumping. The flea likes a warm environment and therefore jumps from different pet and humans for a place to live in. Though its eggs are undeveloped during the cold season, the eggs tend to hatch during the warm and mild seasons. The eggs first hatch into larvae and then develop into fleas. Most of what is found on pets is eggs and larvae. Once the new adult fleas emerge from the larvae, they must have a blood source to survive. Even if you sometimes can not detect the actual flea on your pet, you will notice their black poppy seed-like excrement.

The tick, unlike the flea which is an insect, is classified as an arachnid. They have a four stage life cycle including: eggs, larvae, nymphs and adults. At each stage there must be a blood meal for survival. Ticks are found in wooded areas, lawns and forests, and pets and humans are usually bitten when they venture into those areas. The tick tends to be tenacious holding onto to its victim with its claw-like legs and sticky secretions.

Statistical studies show the following:
There are more than 200 species of fleas in the United States, but the one that causes most of the problems for American pets is the cat flea. These species of fleas represent about 85 to 95 percent of all household fleas found in North America.

There are about 850 different species of ticks, while in the United States there are about 200 species. Ticks transmit the greatest number of infectious conditions and diseases than any other parasite.
