STRESS
Description
There are different types of stress that
affects individuals differently. Stress can
have a great adverse effect on the physical
and mental health of some people, while have
a minimal affect on others who can cope
better. There is the acute stress, the
episodic acute stress and the chronic
stress, each presents with different
characteristics and symptoms and therefore
each is treated differently. One disorder
that has been recently been studied more
intensively is Post Traumatic Stress
Disorder, due to the effect the current war
has on the soldiers that have been fighting.
Statistical studies
show the following:
Statistical research studies have shown that
in general stress affects mens health more
than it does women. There are a myriad of
reasons speculated as to the reason women
seem to cope better, one of which is that
women have more support networks than men
did. Most Americans cite money has the
number one stressor in their life while a
smaller but significant number refer to
their jobs as the culprit. In fact it is
estimated that about $7500 is by
corporations spent annually
on each employees on stress related
consequences such as absentism, employee
turnover, medical and insurance costs and
compensation claims. In todays society,
increasing number of young people report
feeling stressed.
Types and Symptoms
Acute Stress
This most common type is stressed is
experienced due to pressures from the recent
past or worries related to the near future.
This form of stress is short term and
therefore does (?) cause the
extensive physical and psychological damage
that the chronic stress causes.
Symptoms include
Irritability, anger
and anxiety
Back pain, jaw pain,
tension headaches and pulled muscles,
tendons or ligaments.
Irritable bowel
syndrome, constipation, diarrhea and other
stomach discomforts.
Shortness of breath,
chest pain and dizziness
Episodic
Acute Stress
This is the frequent occurrence of acute
stress. Those with Type A personality traits
are noted to have the extreme form of
episodic acute stress. They have a
disposition marked by excessive
competitiveness, impatience, hostility and a
strong need to control. The worriers are
another group whose obsessive nervousness
leads to adverse physical and mental
affects.
Symptoms include:
Chest pain and heart
disease
Tension and migraine
headaches
High blood pressure
Chronic
Stress
This is a prolonged dysfunction of an
individuals equilibrium that results from
either psychological or physical pressures
in the environment or lifestyle rather than
a single traumatic event. Post Traumatic
Stress Disorder is an example of chronic
stress in which a person is unable to cope
with an extreme psychological trauma.
Symptoms include;
In its most severe
form it can lead to death through suicide,
heart disease, strokes and cancers.
Symptoms of PTSD
include restlessness, insomnia or
nightmares, easy to anger, and
disassociation.

General Tips
It is important to learn breathing
techniques to use in stressful situations
Eat a well balanced diet. Limit sugar and
caffeine. Increase fiber intake
Exercise regularly or do yoga or qigong
Get adequate sleep. Sleep on a magnetic

Find out about local support groups
Go to the expert to find a therapist
proficient in cognitive behavior therapy
Get a massage
