ANESTHESIOLOGY

Description
Anesthesiology is the branch of medicine that specializes in the administration of anesthesia, which is derived from Greek “an” meaning absence and “astheis” meaning sensation.

The doctor who promotes anesthesia in his patients aims to block the sensation of feelings or pain. An anesthesiologist can focus his practice on blocking sensations of his patient who is undergoing surgery. He or she may refocus their practice and deal primarily with pain management.

Statistical studies show the following:
Very little research is done on anesthesiology and its affects. Currently there are no conclusive studies that show any difference between men and women and their response to anesthesia or pain relief.

Types and Symptoms
Anesthesia is used today for:
  •  Analgesia which is blocking the pain sensation
  •  To produce unconsciousness and prevent the creation of any memories
  •  Prevent reflexes and muscle movement.

General Tips
  •  Talk to your anesthesiologist about any concerns you have about the being under anesthesia including residual affects after the surgical procedure.
  •  Inform your doctor of any allergies you might have
  •  Tell your physician if you smoke or drink as it may affect recovery from anesthesia
  •  Call your doctor if the following symptoms begin within two weeks of getting general anesthesia
headaches, abdominal pain or back and leg pain
  •  Nausea, vomiting of blood or coffee colored grounds, or lack of appetite
  •  Changes in the urine or inability to urinate
  •  Weakness and pallor
  •  Yellowing of the whites of the eyes
  •  Discuss with your doctor who manages your pain about the World Health Organizations pain management guidelines
  •  Ask your doctor about his pain management protocol plan for you
