Description
Derived from the Greek word cheirourgen, meaning to work with the hand, Surgery is the branch of medicine that treats and manages illnesses and injuries by manual procedures and instrumental treatment. Though there are surgical doctor who perform general surgeries, most modern surgeons specialize on one part of the anatomy of a human body.

Such specialties include: Neurological surgery, Cardiac Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Gastrointestinal Surgery, Ophthalmologic (eye) surgery among many others.

Statistical studies show the following:
According to the latest data from the National Center for Health Statistics, 40 million inpatient surgical procedures were performed in the United States in 2000, followed closely by 31.5 million outpatient surgeries. Women have more surgery than men. In fact the rate of surgical procedures for women was 34% higher than men

The most common non-obstetric surgical procedures include amputations, appendectomies, hernia repairs, circumcisions, cataract repairs and dental extractions.

Some of the most common conditions where surgical procedures are utilized are: Wounds caused by physical trauma, inflamed or infected body parts or organs, tumors and cancers, birth defects, and brain and nerve damage among many others.
