SKIN DISORDERS: Skin Cancer
Description
Uncontrolled growth of the cells of the outer layer of the skin. Since the outer layer of the skin is made of 3 different types of cells, the cancer is classified by which of the cells is involved.
Statistical studies
show the following:
In the United States skin cancer is the most common form of cancer. 1 in 5 Americans will develop some form of skin cancer during their lifetime. There is a higher incidence of skin cancer in people over the age of 50 but the risk from sun exposure is there at any age. Skin cancer occurs 20 times more frequently in Caucasians than in African Americans, but people with dark pigmented skin can develop skin cancer on the palms of their hands, the soles of their feet, under their nail and in their mouth. Although only 4% of skin cancer is melanoma it accounts for 75% of skin cancer deaths in the United States.
