AGE-RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION (AMD)

Description
AMD is the progressive destruction of the macula which is the center and highly sensitive part of the retina. This results in the progressive loss of sharp, central vision which is needed to recognize faces and do such tasks as reading or driving.

Statistical studies show the following:
The leading cause of blindness in the United States for individuals over the age 50 is macular degeneration. Currently there are about 1.5% of Americans over the age of 40 who have this disorder, however the number significantly increase with age. Due to the aging of the American population, the number of individuals affected by this disease is expected to increase.

Symptoms
There are two types of AMD; Dry AMD and Wet AMD.
  • Dry AMD
Initially the most common sign is blurred vision. As the disease progresses, many individuals begin to see a small but progressively increasing in size blind spot in the middle of their field of vision
  • Wet AMD
A more advanced and damaging form of eye disease, is caused by leakage of blood and fluid distorting vision or a blind spot may be created resulting in loss of central vision.
