Description
Fibroids are benign tumors of the uterus. The tumor may be composed of smooth muscles cells or fibrous connective tissue.
Statistical studies
show the following:
It is estimated that in the United States as many as 70% of women in their reproductive years have fibroids. Statistical studies show that the condition is more prevalent among African American women than their white counterparts. About 600,000 hysterectomies are performed in the United States annually with approximately 170,000-300,000 due to fibroids. Hysterectomies are performed in the United States on an average of 12 hysterectomies every 10 minutes.
Types and Symptoms
There are three primary types of fibroid
tumors, which are classified according to
their location on the uterus
Subserosal Fibroids: Develop on the outer portion of the uterus and
continue to grow outward.
Intramural Fibroids: Develop within the uterine wall. This is the most
common form of fibroids.
Submucosal Fibroids: Develop under the lining of the uterus. This is the
least common form of fibroids.
Penduculated Fibroids. Grow on a stalk either inside or outside of the
uterus.
Fibroids are
also referred to as also referred to as
myoma, leiomyoma, leiomyomata, and
fibromyoma
Symptoms
Very heavy and prolonged menstrual periods
that involve sudden gushing or expulsion of
large blood clots
Anemia due to blood loss with symptoms of
weakness, tiredness and dizziness.
Pain or pressure in the pelvic area, back,
thighs, and back of legs, as well as pain
during sexual intercourse
Constant abdominal pressure and feeling of
bloating
Bladder symptoms which include urgency,
leakage, frequency, difficulty or inability
to urinate
Bowel symptoms which include hemorrhoids,
constipation, and bloating
Enlarged abdomen at times mistaken for
pregnancy
Causes
The cause of
fibroids is unknown. However, studies show
that the female hormone estrogen does
promote their growth, though it is not
thought to be responsible for the appearance
of fibroids.
Treatment
No treatment is recommended if no symptoms are present.
When treatment is warranted the following are some methods that can be utilized:
- Uterine Artery Embolization: a procedure done in a doctors office in which microscopic particles are injected into the arteries that feed the fibroids to block the blood supply necessary for the fibroids.
- Myomectomy: surgical removal of the fibroids in the uterus. Frequent complications that arise from this procedure are excessive bleeding, scarring and infertility.
- Hysterectomy: Total or partial removal of the uterus, sometimes the ovaries and the fallopian tubes are removed as well.
