CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME
Description
Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve, which runs from the forearm into the hand, becomes pressed or squeezed at the wrist. The median nerve is housed by the carpal tunnel which is a narrow pathway made of bone and ligaments at the base of the hand. Thickening of tendon sheaths and arthritic changes at the wrist can reduce the size of the tunnel causing pressure on the nerve and therefore pain and discomfort
Statistical studies
show the following:
About 3 out 100 Americans suffer from Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, with women outnumbering the men at a ratio of 3 to 1. More than 50% of those affected have it in both hands. It is one of the most common cause of partial disability and results in up to a month loss of work time
Types and Symptoms
Frequent burning, tingling, or itching numbness in the palm of the hand and the fingers, especially the thumb and the index and middle fingers. As it progresses decreased grip strength develops making it difficult to grasp small objects or perform manual tasks.
