Description
Teething is a process by which teeth break through the gums in a sequential pattern. Teeth actually develop in the womb but sprout out over a period of time a number of teeth at a time usually in a specific order. The first two teeth to break through are the bottom middle followed by the top middle, then the sides and the back. The last teeth to emerge are the second molars which are located in the top and bottom all the way back of the mouth. It can take years before all of the baby teeth or otherwise known as the “milk” teeth to come out.

Statistical studies show the following:
Normally teeth begin to emerge between the ages of 3 months to 9 months. Studies show that the pattern of teething is hereditary imitating what the parents experienced. In general teeth erupt earlier for girls than for boys.

Signs and Symptoms
The following are some of the symptoms that babies may experience when teething:
 •  Drooling
 •  Irritability and fussiness
 •  Biting and Gnawing
 •  Low grade fever
 •  Poor sleeping pattern –baby is usually crankier at night when teething
 •  Diarrhea
 •  Rash on the chin or face
 •  Gum or ear rubbing
These symptoms usually abate when the tooth erupts or shortly after.

Questions to ask the expert
 •  What if my baby’s teeth don’t come out in the usual pattern
 •  Should the tooth be pulled out if the baby is born with a tooth
 •  How do I know if the fever and diarrhea is due to teething or to infections
 •  How can I assure that my baby’s teeth remain healthy

General Tips
 •  Give your child something to chew on like teething rings.
 •  Teething rings that are frozen are better because the cold numbs the pain
 •  Never tie the teething ring around the neck as it can cause choking
 •  Rub baby’s gums with your finger
 •  Offer the baby cold foods
 •  Give Tylenol for stronger pain relief
 •  Use homeopathic teething tablets
 •  Wipe the baby’s face from the drool to prevent rashes and irritation of the skin
 •  Brush the baby’s teeth as soon as they appear (this is recommended by all dentists)
 •  It is recommended that the baby be seen by a dentist between 6 months to 1 year
 •  Seek medical advice if fever is high or diarrhea does not abate after 1-2 days
